What GEO means

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of making a brand’s information useful and discoverable in AI-generated answers. It overlaps with answer engine optimization (AEO), though terminology varies across the industry.

The practical question is straightforward: when a person asks about your category, can an answer accurately explain your offering and cite useful evidence? That is a more grounded goal than trying to force a specific position in every response.

Where SEO still matters

Search engines and AI search experiences need access to clear, reliable content. Pages should be crawlable, understandable and useful to the people they serve. Technical accessibility, descriptive headings, relevant internal links and accurate information remain sensible foundations.

Google’s guidance for its AI search features says that established SEO best practices remain relevant and that there are no additional technical requirements specifically for inclusion. Meeting requirements does not guarantee that a page will be surfaced.

Start with questions, then evidence

Choose a defined audience and a small, intentional set of questions. Include discovery, comparison and decision prompts. Record the engine, date, market and collection method for each observation.

Read the answers before reducing them to a score. Distinguish a passing brand mention from a recommendation, and a citation from a referral visit. Review the cited pages to understand the context that is available to a reader.

Improve something specific

Look for a gap you can describe precisely: an unclear product limitation, an outdated feature page, a missing comparison or a claim without supporting evidence. Assign an owner and record the change.

Avoid publishing a large volume of repetitive pages simply to target prompt variations. A clear, original explanation that solves a real customer problem is a better editorial standard.

Build a learning loop

Repeat your observations with a consistent sample. Treat movement as evidence to investigate, not automatic proof that your last edit caused it. Models, retrieval systems and competitor pages can change at the same time.

A mature practice combines sound content work, transparent measurement and curiosity about what the evidence actually shows.
