Define the denominator
A percentage needs a clear base. Brand mention rate can be defined as eligible answers containing the brand divided by all eligible answers in the sample. Report the numerator, denominator and any exclusions.
For example, 34 mentions in 50 eligible answers is a 68% mention rate for that sample. It is not a claim that the brand appears in 68% of every answer across the entire engine.
Keep mentions and citations separate
A mention names a brand. A citation links to a source. The two can occur together, but one does not require the other. A report should explain which event each metric counts.
For citation reporting, distinguish between the share of answers citing your domain and the share of all citations that point to it. Both can be useful, but they have different denominators.
Use a consistent comparison
Keep prompt wording, engine mix, locale and collection period comparable. If a sample changes, annotate it. Break a broad average down by topic so a shift in the mix does not masquerade as improvement.
Report percentage-point changes correctly. A rate moving from 40% to 50% rises by 10 percentage points, or 25% relative to the original rate. State which one you mean.
Connect to outcomes carefully
Referral analytics can show identifiable visits from some AI sources. They cannot reveal every interaction that influenced a buyer. A person might read an answer and visit your site later through another channel.
Read referral visits and conversions alongside visibility trends, customer research and other marketing activity. Do not claim that a visibility change directly caused revenue without evidence that supports that attribution.
Make uncertainty visible
Repeated answers may differ. Models and sources change. Small samples can be noisy. A trustworthy report makes those limitations explicit and keeps the observed answers available for inspection.
Use the report to make a reasoned decision: what to investigate, what to improve, and what to measure next. A clear decision is more useful than a dramatic number.
